Reddit Marketing Playbook for SaaS

Reddit hates marketers - but loves helpful founders. This playbook shows you how to build genuine presence on Reddit that drives traffic, builds trust, and generates signups without a single spammy post.

Week 1: Account & Recon

Set up your account and study the landscape. Create a Reddit account (use your real name or founder identity) Join 10-15 subreddits where your target audience hangs out Lurk for a full week: read posts, study what gets upvoted and what gets removed Identify 5 subreddits with active discussions about problems your product solves Note the rules of each subreddit - especially around self-promotion Start building karma by commenting helpfully on non-promotional threads

Week 2: Karma Building

Establish credibility before any promotion. Comment on 5-10 posts per day with genuinely helpful answers Answer questions in your area of expertise with detailed responses Share insights and data without linking to your product Upvote good content and participate in discussions Aim for 100+ comment karma before any promotional activity

Weeks 3-4: Value-First Posting

Start posting original content that helps people. Write a detailed 'how-to' post about a problem your product solves (no product mention) Share an original case study or data analysis relevant to the subreddit Create a useful free resource and share it (no email gate) Ask thoughtful questions that spark discussion When someone asks about tools, mention yours as ONE option among several Never direct-link to your landing page in posts

Week 5: Soft Promotion

Start naturally integrating your product. Answer 'what tool do you use for X?' questions mentioning your product with context Post a build-in-public update in r/SaaS, r/startups, or r/indiehackers Share a 'I built this because...' story focusing on the problem, not the product Offer free access/discounts to Redditors who ask about your category Cross-post your best-performing content to related subreddits (if rules allow)

Week 6: System & Scale

Build a sustainable Reddit presence. Set a daily routine: 15 minutes morning, 15 minutes evening Track which subreddits drive the most traffic (use UTM parameters) Create a saved list of common questions you can answer regularly Set up Google Alerts for Reddit mentions of competitor names Document your top 5 performing posts and replicate the format Never automate - Reddit detects and bans bots aggressively
