Activation Rate
The percentage of new signups who complete a key action that correlates with long-term retention.
What it means
Activation rate measures how many new users reach your product's 'aha moment' - the point where they experience the core value. This might be sending their first message (Slack), creating their first design (Figma), or scheduling their first post (Forgefy). Users who activate are dramatically more likely to become paying customers and stay long-term.
Formula
Activation Rate = (Users who complete key action ÷ Total new signups) × 100%
Why it matters
Acquisition without activation is a leaky bucket. If 1,000 people sign up but only 50 activate, your real top-of-funnel is 50. Improving activation from 5% to 15% effectively triples your pipeline without spending a cent more on marketing. It's often the highest-leverage metric to optimize.
What is activation rate?
Activation rate is the percentage of new signups who complete a meaningful first action in your product - the action that predicts they'll become retained, paying users.
How do you improve activation rate?
Simplify onboarding, reduce time-to-value, use interactive tutorials, send targeted onboarding emails, and remove unnecessary steps between signup and the aha moment.
