Build in Public Starter Checklist
Ready to start building in public but not sure where to begin? This checklist takes you from zero to your first week of sharing your founder journey.
Choose your primary platform (X or LinkedIn)
Start with one. X has the largest BIP community. LinkedIn works for B2B. Master one before adding more.
Update your bio to mention what you're building
"Building [Product] in public" immediately tells people what to expect from your content.
Decide what metrics you'll share
MRR, user count, feature launches, mistakes? Define boundaries upfront - what's public, what's private.
Post your 'Day 1' tweet
"Starting today: I'm building [Product] in public. Here's what it does and why I'm building it. Follow along 👇"
Share your first metric
"Day 1 numbers: 0 users, $0 MRR, 1 idea. Let's see where this goes." Honesty at zero is powerful.
Write about why you're building this
Personal motivation post: "Why I quit [X] to build [Product]." Origin stories get high engagement.
Share your first screenshot
Show your product, even if it's ugly. People love seeing real work-in-progress.
Reply to 5 other builders' posts
Join the community by engaging with others. BIP is a two-way street.
Set a recurring weekly update schedule
Pick a day (Fridays are popular) for your weekly recap: wins, losses, learnings.
Share your first failure or challenge
"Honest update: this week was rough. [What happened] and [what I learned]." Vulnerability builds trust.
Ask your audience for input on a decision
"Should I build feature A or feature B first? Reply below." Engagement + market research in one post.
Celebrate your first small win
First user, first dollar, first positive feedback. No win is too small to share when you're starting out.
